About

The Environmental Capacity and Sustainability Institute (ECAS Institute) makes environmental law and policy work for people, places and the planet. We work with stakeholders across institutions, international bodies, academia, civil society and industry, and our team of environmentalists, researchers and policymakers to build capacity based on research evidence and policy insight. We are a not-for-profit organization with over 6 years of experience committed to advancing impact-driven environmental and sustainability law and policy across East Africa and the world.

Since 2017, ECAS Institute has played a pivotal role in shaping the fields of environmental law, and policy, both domestically and in the region. We are an internationally recognized, non-partisan capacity building, research and education centre working to strengthen environmental protection by improving law, policy and governance worldwide.

We deliver insightful and impartial analyses to opinion makers, including government agencies, businesses, academics, NGOs, communities and journalists. We provide a common ground for debate and dialogue on important environmental issues.

Vision

A healthy environment, prosperous economies and vibrant communities founded on environmental rule of law.

Mission

Foster innovative, just, and practical law and policy solutions to enable institutions, organizations, businesses and individuals across sectors to make environmental, economic and social progress.

Our Approach

For nearly 6 years, ECAS Institute has been developing and catalyzing the implementation of sound and effective laws and policies that address environmental problems. Through our strong partnerships with governments, non-governmental and community groups, businesses, universities, and environmental professionals across the globe, ECAS is able to play a central role in bringing the best and most effective environmental solutions to bear, tailored to local circumstances. ECAS also builds the capacity of stakeholders across the globe and around the world to improve environmental outcomes through teaching themes about law, policy, procedures, strategies and their rights to development. We illuminate critical environmental decisions of the day by providing objective data and analysis. And we convene diverse groups to work together to solve today’s most pressing challenges through seminars, workshops, training, and events.
As we look ahead, ECAS will amplify its strengths through a focus on:

o Environment and Climate Change Law and Policy Advocacy
o Protecting Natural Resources
o Waste and Circular Economy
o Degradation and Pollution of Air and Land Resources
o Water, Marine and Fisheries
o Agriculture and Land Management
o Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Nature Based Solutions
o Green Economy and Just Transition

Our role takes many forms

1. Policy and legal advice and Support

Our extensive range of expertise and up-to-date knowledge of African policy and legislation enables us to provide clients and partners with tailor-made advice and intelligence. From developing Climate Change Act 2016, EMCA (Amendment 2015), to helping develop Kenya’s and Africa’s positions to the Conference of the Parties under the UNFCCC, to the United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA), to the African Ministerial Conference on Environment (AMCEN) to the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (UNCD) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), we work with our partners to generate data and to create practical, implementable and tailored laws and policies, and strategies, learning experiences of others.

2. Education, Training and Capacity Building

Across Kenya and the Region, we teach people about law, policy, procedures, strategists, and their roles in development and business growth. We are training individuals, groups and institutions around the world on critical topics in domestic and international human resource practices, environment, climate change and energy laws and policies and informing communities dependent on natural resources on how to influence forests, land and natural resource protection and conservation. We educate thousands of professionals each year in Africa, with the conviction that more skilled professionals result in better environmental, programme, and business outcomes. The ultimate goal is to help individuals, institutions and companies/businesses improve the implementation of business and environmental law, policies and strategies.

3. Research and Objective Data

We undertake research to fill the gap in collective understanding and inform decisions on the most critical policy and project decisions of the day, from energy, water, agriculture, forestry, land, and humanitarian sectors to researching business strategies, regulations and technologies. To ensure a better-informed dialogue through common sources of good information, we also disseminate research findings and cutting-edge proposals to innovate for better policy and development solutions.

4. Convening Diverse Groups to Solve Problems

We host dialogues with clear objectives, strong preparation and quality facilitation. We convene scientists, journalists, CSOs, NGOs, the private sector and policymakers to build bridges, foster common understanding, explore are of ultimate agreements and identify solutions to important policy questions.
